A Challenge spoken at the Ealdomere
Pas d'Armes

Introduction
Making your challenge is not dependent upon being eloquent; sincerity is the key component, and it comes through whether the delivery is simple or complex. Speak the reasons that you are on the field. What inspires you? What do you hope to accomplish?
The reasons for these challenges are to reinforce the reasons for being present within the lists before the combats occur. By reaffirming your reasons before entering into combat (the final reaffirmation is done with the salute, but that is another essay...) you communicate your intent clearly to your opponent and to the gallery. This communication encourages others and sets the expectation for chivalric conduct that should be seen throughout the day. Each combatant has a part in this--yet each person who speaks about their inspiration and hopes builds upon what has already been said and done, creating a kind of "chivalric inertia" that will help the tournament itself inspire combatants to both prowess and courtesy.
The challenge that follows was delivered by our own Sean A. Garrison--aka
sca Lord Vitus Lithold, Esquire. Lord Vitus had a herald deliver it while
he stood armed and ready to challenge into the lists and the Ealdomere
Pas d'Armes, doing a fine job of making his intentions known. This is a
formal, eloquent challenge that represents to "fancier" side of the challenge
spectrum; remember that as long as the sincerity comes through challenges
can be simple or complex, and they will still work beautifully (I have
even seen combatants stutter from fear and still impress everyone present
just by what they said, and the sincerity of their rough presentation).
A Challenge to Combat
| To this noble assembly does Lord
vitus litold, squire of the Middle Kingdom send warmest greeting-
Well met. For many long years have I heard of the beauty of Ealdomere and with great admiration and wonder in my heart have I traveled these many leagues to see it with my own eyes. As our glorious ancestors instructed those, who in their own times, sught the holy cleansing bath, so too do I pay heed to their lessons. Through the holy tribulations of tourney, quest and war have I kept this vow- that I would one day come to this land, meet it's famous men-at-arms and see it's fairest ladies, who are famed throughout the world for their wit, grace and beauty. As for my inspiration to endure these hardships, they are gladly borne upon my back to spread the fame and renown of a lady so kind and beauteous that my weak words cannot weave an image- they do nothing but paint me as a lovesick fool. Lady Kara of Blackforest is my most-worshipped consort. May God make me worthy of her grace and favour. To all those who would bear arms in the Behourd this day, I bring you earnest and heartfelt greetings. Please know that I have came here to engage in friendly combat and I will not strike any in malice or anger. Also know that I have brought gifts for those who shall gallantly answer the questions I shall ply. That being said, I most gratefully thank you. Lord Vitus Lithold, Esq. |
